KINGS POINT, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) baseball team saw their come-from-behind efforts halted in the second game of their Saturday doubleheader against the United States Merchant Marine Academy as the Mariners (2-0, 2-0 Skyline) outlasted the Bears (0-8, 0-5 Skyline), 12-8 from Bartoszek Field.

In the first game of the twin bill, the first game to be played on USMMA's new field, the Mariners opened their 2021 campaign with an 8-1 victory.

Game 1 - Merchant Marine 8, St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) 1

Matt McHugh had a strong opening two innings on the mound before running into trouble in the third, allowing a pair of runs in the stanza. McHugh (0-3) would last 4.1 innings on the hill.

With runners on the corners for Anthony Hernandez in the bottom of the fourth, the freshman cut the Bears' deficit in half as his single drove in William DeLuca, 2-1. Hernandez finished the game going 3-for-3 with a double while Lucas Collet collected a pair of base knocks.

Headlined by a two-run inside-the-park home run from Joey Zanetti, the Mariners separated themselves from SJC, scoring a pair of runs in each of the next three innings; resulting in the 8-1 final.

Game 2 - Merchant Marine 12, St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) 8

The Bears wasted little time in getting on the board as two runs scored on a Hernandez single with the bases loaded in the home half of the first. The base hit was his fourth consecutive game with a knock. Collet and Louis Lombardi added to the early 4-0 advantage.

USMMA grabbed a run back in the second frame before the Bears retook the four-run lead after the third, 5-1.

Starter Mike Santoriello (0-2) lasted four innings after the Mariners plated three runs in the stanza; tacking on five in the fifth to take a lead, 9-5. However, the Bears would not go quietly as they mounted a comeback in the sixth. Collet singled down the left-field line to help drive in DeLuca and Kevin Reyes. Lombardi followed it up with a single of his own to score Hernandez and to pull the Bears back to within one, 9-8.

On the bump, Lombardi tossed 1.1 innings in relief, fanning three Mariners.

The Bears' comeback bid fell short as Merchant Marine added an insurance run in the eighth courtesy of Zac Skov's RBI triple in the eighth and a pair of runs in the ninth to give the Mariners the Saturday sweep of SJC, 12-8.
