Falcons Down Bears Tennis in Home Opener

FLUSHING, NY – St. Joseph's men's tennis got off to an early lead picking up two wins in the three doubles contests, but couldn't hold on, dropping a 5-4 decision to Albertus Magnus at the National Tennis Center.  The win is the first on the season for the Falcons, lifting their record to 1-3, while the Bears fall to 0-2.

The pairings of Derrick Akwei (Bronx, NY/Port Angeles HS)/James Hanophy (Albertson, NY/Holy Trinity HS) and Evenezer Tekie (Indianapolis, IN/Herron HS)/Martin Torres (Ozone Park, NY/St. Francis Prep) took home wins at second and third doubles respectively, 8-5 and 8-4, giving the Bears an early 2-1 lead on the Falcons.

Hanophy took fourth singles in a spirited 10-8 match with Heath Henderson, but the Falcons won four of the six singles matches which proved to be the difference in the 5-4 match.  Tekie was the only other Bear to win their singles match, defeating Troy Owens 10-5 at sixth set.

St. Joseph's will take on their next HVMAC opponent, Pratt, on Tuesday April 10th.  First serve is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
