Men's Volleyball Falls in Straight Sets to Lehman College, 3-0

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team played close in the first set, but too many errors later in the match were the downfall as they were defeated by Lehman College in straight sets, 3-0 (25-20, 25-10, 25-12), on Wednesday night at The APEX at Lehman College.

The Bears (2-4) struggled with their errors throughout the game, compiling 20 of them during their three-set match against the Lightning (6-10), who only trailed one time throughout the game.

Raul Urshela (Orlando, Fla./Colonial) contributed a team-high 15 kills, while Taso Kostikas (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) had four kills and 12 digs in a losing cause for the Bears.

Lehman was led by Jaleel Lino, who contributed a match-high 16 kills as well as six digs. Roberto Perez topped all players with 19 assists for the Lightning.

The Bears got off to a slow start in the first set, but fought gallantly with 11 points late in the set to get within five points. However, a service error closed out the set for the Lightning, 25-20.

The second frame saw Lehman rattle off a 10-1 run late to take the set, 25-10. Lino had five kills in the set to put the Lightning up two sets to none.

The final stanza had the Bears hang around early in the set, trailing by just two points, but saw their chances fade as they fell behind due to 11 errors to close out a 3-0 set sweep for Lehman, 25-12.

  • The Bears hit .000 for the match and had the same number of kills and errors (20 K-20 E-18 A) while the Hawks hit .312 in their three-game sweep and only committed seven errors throughout (31 K-7 E-30 A).
