Women's Basketball Plays Host to Staten Island at Barclays Center on Tuesday. Tip-off Moved Up to 2:30 PM.

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Following their win over their sibling school, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's basketball team (4-3) will head to Barclays Center to host the College of Staten Island. Please note that tip-off is now scheduled for 2:30 p.m. up from the originally scheduled time of 3 p.m.

Storylines

  • The Lady Bears are seeking their second victory against the College of Staten Island. Their last win against the Dolphins came on January 31, 2012 ending a 13-game skid to the Dolphins.
  • Samantha Retas has tallied three straight double-doubles, totaling five on the season. The senior also set a Lady Bear record eight blocks in the win over St. Joseph's (Long Island).
  • This will be the second game the Lady Bears have played at Barclays Center, home of the Brooklyn Nets. They look to reverse a loss in their only other appearance to Albertus Magnus, 76-71, on January 5, 2013.
  • Staten Island is looking for their second straight victory, after defeating CUNYAC conference rival John Jay, 69-59 on December 11th.
  • The Dolphins are a big threat from beyond the arc, currently second in the CUNYAC in three-point percentage with a 31.3% shooting percentage. They have netted 67 baskets from long range, one away from the conference leader Lehman College.

Series History

The two schools have met on 16 previous occasions with the Dolphins owning a commanding 15-1 advantage since 1995. The Lady Bears lone victory came in January 2012, ending a 13-game skid.

Last Meeting

In the third-place game of the NYU Tip-Off Tournament, St. Joseph's was unable to keep pace with a hot-shooting College of Staten Island team, falling 75-62 on November 16, 2013. Samantha Retas led three Lady Bears in double figures, netting 20 points, including four three-pointers, and pulled down a game-high 17 rebounds.

The Lady Bear Facts

Senior Samantha Retas leads the Lady Bears with an average of 13.9 points per game and is second in the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) in rebounds per game with 14.0 per contest. The senior is tops in the conference with 3.0 blocked shots per game as well following her eight-block effort against St. Joseph's (Long Island).

Sophomore Jamilynn McGowan and freshman Destiny Marino are tied for second in scoring with 10.6 points per game. McGowan is also third in the conference, shooting an efficient 44.1 percent from the field. Marino is second on the team with 7.1 boards per game and also is second in the HVIAC with a team-high 4.4 assists per game for St. Joseph's.

Senior Taylor Raccuglia is a great versatile player for the Lady Bears. She is currently averaging 7.3 points, second with 4.0 assists (fifth in the HVIAC) and also grabs 5.4 rebounds per contest. Raccuglia is also third in the conference with 1.8 blocks per game.

Lady Bears Last Time Out

Samantha Retas led a balanced offensive attack with her third straight double-double as the Lady Bears defeated St. Joseph's (Long Island), 69-58, in the East vs. West Showdown as part of the Hill Center Grand Opening last Thursday night.

Retas was two blocks away from a triple-double, leading the team with 14 points, 17 rebounds and a Lady Bear single-game-high eight blocks as they snapped a two-game losing streak. The eight blocks broke the previous record of six held by her and Taylor Raccuglia.  The senior now has five double-doubles on the season, and 26 in her career.

Raccuglia herself rejected five shots to go along with eight points and five assists – the 13 combined blocks setting a new team single-game record.

Destiny Marino rounded out three in double figures, tallying 13 points and three assists, while Brittany Cervino tallied eight points, including drilling two treys, and had seven rebounds.

Defending the Court

Through seven games, the Lady Bears are one of the premiere defensive teams in the country. They lead all of NCAA Division III in defensive rebounds (38.0) and are currently sixth in field goal percentage defense (29.7%), rebound margin (14.1). On the offensive end, SJC ranks sixth in assists per game (19.3). 

Lady Bears Remain in USCAA Top 10

In the second USCAA Coaches Poll released last week, the Lady Bears stayed put at No. 8.

Dolphin Watch

The Dolphins are led by Christina Pasaturo, who leads the team and is fourth in the CUNYAC, with 14.6 points per game on the season. She is also second in the conference in three-point percentage, shooting at a 42.9% clip (21 for 49) from beyond the arc.

Megan Myhre is second on the team with a 9.8 points per game average, while Victoria Crea scores 9.3 points per contest. Nikki Fabozzi leads the team with 6.8 boards per game to go along with 7.9 points per game. She also is in the CUNYAC top ten in both blocks (1.1) and steals (1.8).

Staten Island Last Time Out

The College of Staten Island snapped their two-game losing skid tonight, scoring a road conference win over John Jay College, 69-59 on December 11. Christina Pasaturo lead three Dolphins in double figures with 17 points, while Megan Myhre chipped in with 15 points and six rebounds in the victory.
