Top 10 Moments: #9 – 2011-12, One For The Record Books...

Our second weekly installment looks at the collection of individual accomplishments over the past year. There have been so many it would have been unfair to single out an individual one.

Men’s basketball’s Justin Gist joined the 1,000 point scoring club in January in the first half of a home victory over Lehman, becoming the eighth Bear in the last 10 years to reach the plateau. An honorable mention also goes to women’s basketball’s Ashley McQuillan who finished her career just shy of the 1,500 point mark.

In baseball, Kevin Diaz became the third member of 100 hit club and the fastest to gain membership to the illustrious club.  Fellow member Joseph Boccia also became the first Bear to score 100 runs and finished his career as the all-time hits leader.  Setting a single-season record for wins and strikeouts, Paul Piccirillo’s unblemished 9-0 record on the mound will surely stand as one of the finest seasons in Bears history.

Guiding the Bears to their first winning season, skipper Scott Losche notched his 100th career win in his eighth year coaching, with previous stints at CCNY and Baruch.  An honorable mention also goes to rookie Thomas McKenna who matched the single-season hits record (49), set by Diaz last year.

When softball season rolled around, it seemed like a new milestone was being reached every game.  Over a doubleheader sweep of Purchase at home, Alyson Chiaramonte notched her 50th victory and fanned her 500th batter, also giving Frank P. Carbone his 200th victory in his 11th season as head coach of the Lady Bears.  Both Caitlyn Kakavas and Millicia Malvasio later joined the 100 hit clubs, Malvasio doing so in only three seasons following teammates Chiaramonte and Lisa Scheer.  Chiaramonte, Scheer and Kakavas also crossed the 100 run and 100 RBI clubs.

At the Hudson Valley Women’s Athletic Conference Softball Tournament, Jillian Troise became the first Lady Bear to hit for the cycle, knocking her first career home run and a triple in her final at bat, capping a 4-for-4 game with six RBI and three runs in the semifinal win over Sarah Lawrence, en route to receiving tournament MVP honors.

The Lady Bears Softball Class of 2012 of Chiaramonte, Scheer, Kakavas, Troise and Emily Palmieri also set a new record as the winningest class in any sport in SJC history, producing 107 wins total.
