2021 Skyline Baseball

  • Teams will face six Skyline opponents in a four-game series (home-and-home doubleheaders).
  • Only the first three games of the four-game series will count toward the league standings.
  • Game 1 of the series will be 7 innings. Game 2 will be 9 innings. (If game 1 goes to extra innings, game 2 will be 7 innings).
  • Game 3 (first game of 2nd doubleheader) will be 9 innings. Game 4 (the non-conference game), will be 7 innings.
  • 10-run rule after 7 innings in effect for the 9-inning games.
  • Top four teams will qualify for the 2021 Skyline Baseball Championship (May 7-9)

The Bear Facts

St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) opens Skyline play this weekend after dropping both ends of a non-conference doubleheader to Mount Saint Vincent last Sunday on opening day.

Junior Thomas Airey and senior Kevin Reyes recorded a pair of hits over the two games with Reyes and freshman Mike Santoriello driving in a pair of runs each. Airey was the lone Bear to hit in both games.

In his first collegiate appearance on the mound, Santoriello tossed six strong innings of relief in game two against the Dolphins. The leftie allowed three runs, all earned, and nine hits while striking out a pair. In the front end of the doubleheader, fellow freshman Jake McDonald struck out three in two innings of work. Underclassmen Andrew Monda and Matt McHugh, both got the ball to start on the mound in each game of the twinbill.

The Bears earned a split of their 2019 doubleheader against Old Westbury in the last meeting between the two schools. In the Bears victory, Reyes lifted a three-run homer that gave the navy and gray the early advantage that they would not surrender. William DeLuca also singled and scored a run as the Bears took the opener, 8-3.

Panther Pulse

After finishing a four-game season in 2020 at .500, Old Westbury begins their 2021 campaign against St. Joseph’s College (Brooklyn). Despite splitting a home doubleheader in their last meeting back in 2019, the Panthers have won five of their last six meetings against the Bears.

Brandon Wilson was the team’s offensive leader in the abbreviated season; averaging .529 while going 9-17 with 10 RBI at the plate. In his last full season, Wilson was one of four Panthers to play in all 40 games of their 2019 slate; starting all but one. The grad student finished the season with 45 hits, 37 runs scored and 19 RBI. Like Wilson, Shaun Kaminski also featured in all 40 games for Old Westbury; racking up 41 hits, 12 for extra bases including a pair of homers, drove in 22 runs and scored as many. 

Mike Manetta started all 34 games he featured in; finishing the 2019 campaign second on the team in batting average (.341), on-base percentage (.411), and runs (34). His 43 hits and .460 slugging percentage were good for third on the team and finished fourth with 17 RBI.

Among returners, Joe Sarni had the lowest ERA in 2019 coming in at 1.85. The senior went 4-2 in 16 appearances on the bump, tossing 39 innings and conceded 13 runs on 38 hits. Sarni also recorded three saves. Patrick Quinn also returns to the Panthers’ squad, pitching 60 innings over 12 appearances and picking up a trio of complete games en route to a 4-3 record.
