The Bear Facts

Following losses to Lehman and Western Connecticut State, the 0-5 Bears are in pursuit of their first win of the season as they host Medgar Evers. History is on SJC’s side as they’ve won both prior meetings against the Cougars at The Hill Center as well as the last four games dating back to the 2013-14 season.

Despite the absence of the team’s leading scorer (22.3), rebounder (10.3), and distributor (3.3) Chris Mikos, junior Evan Sirakis led the team in scoring against WestConn on Tuesday night with 13 points, three short of his season-high. He also logged a pair of assists and rebounds to go with a steal. Joe Sheehan and Joshua Gordon collected four caroms while Chris Williams and dished out three assists.

Over the last two games, Sirakis and Sheehan combined to average 15.5 points and 8.5 boards. Sirakis’ 2.8 dimes are good for second on the squad while Sheehan is second on the Bears in rebounding (5.8). Sheehan’s team-leading six blocks are also enough for a tie for fourth in the Skyline.

The Bears will face a pair of CUNYAC opposition following this afternoon’s contest; York College (Dec. 10) to begin the York Holiday Tournament and Hunter College (Dec. 29) to close out the 2021 calendar year.

Cougar Chronicles

The Cougars enter their meeting with SJC Brooklyn with a 1-5 mark on the year. Medgar Evers is 1-2 against Skyline opposition this season with their lone triumph coming two weeks ago in a 77-67 decision over the SUNY Maritime.

Their last time out, Medgar Evers took Old Westbury to overtime before falling to the Panthers last Saturday, 99-95. Keison McIntosh led all scorers with 27 points on the night while a trio of Cougars – Andre Evans Jr., Dante Simmons, and Mousa Sinera – all netted 19 points. Additionally, Sinera pulled a game-high 25 rebounds in the losing effort; averaging 16.2 caroms on the year.

Evans Jr. entered the week earning back-to-back CUNYAC Rookie of the Week honors. Scoring in double figures in each of the Cougars’ first six games, the freshman turned in a 24-point, seven-assist match against Maritime and a career-high 26 points against Valley Forge. The Bronx native sits second on the squad in points per game (17.7) behind McIntosh’s 17.8. Evans Jr. still holds the team lead with 19 assists and six blocks while he and Sinera share the lead in steals (10).

A victory over the Bears would be the program’s first since January 14, 2013, when they held off a late SJC comeback to win 75-70.
