The Bear Facts

St. Joseph’s Brooklyn welcomes Mount Saint Vincent to Clinton Hill for their third Skyline Conference match of the season. The two sides split the 2019-20 season series with the Bears earning a 66-55 home win in January 2020. Then-sophomore Chris Mikos was one of two current Bears to suit up in the triumph, scoring 13 points with eight rebounds.

Mikos averaged 19.5 points and nine boards in the Bears’ last two contests, including a 27-point effort in a narrow defeat to Medgar Evers, while Evan Sirakis posted 14 points per game in that span. Richie Simon registered his first career double-double against the Cougars, contributing 17 boards and 14 points. In Wednesday night’s rivalry matchup against SJC Long Island, sophomore Samil Melo poured in a career-high 22 points, on 11-of-15 shooting, to lead a trio of Bears in double figures.

Mikos’ 21.3 points per game places him third in the conference and ranks second in rebounds per game with 9.8. Thanks to his 22-point outburst against the Golden Eagles, Melo soared to second place on the team in points per game (12.0). Sirakis rounds out the top three on the team in scoring (10.5).

The Bears will host New Paltz on Wednesday night before kickstarting a six-game stretch away from home.

Mount Saint Vincent enters today’s contest at 3-4 overall (1-1 in conference). After a 34-point home-opening victory over Hunter College, the Dolphins went on a three-game skid before winning the consolation game of the Sig Makofski Invitational against Morrisville State last Sunday and earning their first Skyline triumph on Wednesday night over Old Westbury.

Senior Jeremiah Simmons averaged 13 points on 8-of-12 shooting over two games at the Invite, hosted by Union College, earning All-Tournament honors in the process. Both Simmons and Aaron Darab finished with 12 points on Wednesday with the latter totaling seven rebounds and six assists against the Panthers, both team-highs. Elijah McKenzie netted 13 points and had six boards while the team’s leading scorer Dan Porcic (14.6 ppg) finished with a game- and season-high 25 points on 7-of-12 from three-point land and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.

Porcic is also CMSV’s leading rebounder with 7.0 caroms per contest with Darab and Dillon Hod behind him at 5.0 boards per game. McKenzie’s 10 blocks are good for second in the conference while senior guard Kalos Evans holds the team lead in assists (18) and steals (11).

The Dolphins will close out the calendar year against non-conference opposition before resuming Skyline play on January 4, 2022, against Farmingdale State.
