The Bear Facts

The Bears play in front of the home crowd for the first time in 635 days but face a tall test in defending Skyline champion and nationally-ranked D3hoops.com preseason No. 2 Yeshiva — the highest-ranked NCAA team ever faced by the Bears in team history.

SJC opened the 2021 campaign with a pair of losses at the Eastern Connecticut State Tournament. After falling to the hosts in the opener on Friday, the navy and gray dropped a tough battle to Mitchell College in the consolation despite placing five in double figures and leading for the majority of the contest.

Senior Chris Mikos did it all for the Bears in Connecticut recording a pair of double-doubles and led the team in scoring, rebounding, and assists. Shooting at 62 percent from the field, his 28.5 points per game and 13.0 rebounds both currently pace the Skyline. 

Coming off a 16-point effort vs. Mitchell, junior transfer Evan Sirakis is second on the squad in scoring at 10.5 per game with 2.5 dimes. Juniors James Mojica and Joe Sheehan both scored in double figures for the first time in their collegiate careers on Saturday against Mitchell with 10 points each

 

 

Mac Musings 

Yeshiva carries a 41-game winning streak into Brooklyn — the second-longest streak in Division III history. In 2019-20, the Maccabees dropped their season opener to Occidental but rattled off 29 straight wins which included capturing the Skyline title and advancing to the NCAA Sweet 16 before COVID prompted the cancellation of the remainder of the tournament.

After an unblemished seven-game season last year, the Maccabees opened this season with five dominant victories, boasting an average margin of victory of 35 points. YU also holds a 99-69 triumph over a common opponent with the Bears in Eastern Connecticut State. 

The Macs come off an 81-49 home win over Mount Saint Vincent on Tuesday night to improve to 2-0 in conference play. Eitan Halpert scored a game-high 27 with six rebounds and four steals. Ryan Turrell chipped in 18 points, seven rebounds, and three assists.

D3hoops.com preseason All-Americans Ryan Turrell and Gabriel Leifer lead a potent Macs offense. Turrell, a First Team selection, fills the cup at 25.4 points an outing, second in the Skyline behind Mikos. Second Team honoree Leifer hands out seven assists a game and is second in the nation in total assists while also one of three players in the Skyline to average double-figure rebounds at 10 even.
