2021 Skyline Softball

  • Eight teams will play a full round-robin schedule comprised of a four-game weekend series (home-and-home doubleheaders).
  • Only the first three games of the four-game set will count toward the league standings.
  • Eight-run rule after five innings. International tiebreaker rule starts in the 10th inning.
  • Top four teams will qualify for the 2021 Skyline Softball Championship (May 14-16).

The Bear Facts

Following their season-opening losses to Farmingdale State, the St. Joseph’s College (Brooklyn) softball team will bring their five-game win streak into this weekend’s series against Mount Saint Mary College.
 
Aided by a four-run sixth inning, RBI from Nicole Trani and Ashleigh Hartwig, and a 3-for-3 showing by newcomer Arianna Heinsch, the Bears overcame a two-run deficit against Old Westbury to keep their streak alive, winning the game 5-2 their last time out (3/29).
 
In the series, Trani went 5-for-8 at the plate, averaging .625, driving in eight runs, scoring five, and tripling. Her offensive display against the Panthers led to her first Skyline Rookie of the Week nod.
 
Hartwig and Jessica Mecham also received recognition for their efforts against Old Westbury, featuring on the Weekly Honor Roll.
 
Hartwig collected eight RBI and scored a run as she went 8-for-12 (.666) in the series. Mecham, the league leader in wins (3), started the opening and closing games of the series in the circle. The junior posted a 2.15 ERA, conceding a pair of runs in each contest and combining for five K’s while she logged a pair of hits and RBI, and scored three runs at the plate.
 
Mecham maintains a 2.07 ERA this season in 27 innings of work (second-most in the Skyline). 
 
Hartwig sees herself in the Skyline top three in at-bats (26), hits (12), and RBI (9) while featuring in the top 20 in batting average (.462) and slugging percentage (.615). The California native leads the team in each of those categories. Sierra Bedrin leads SJC with a .577 on-base percentage and eight runs scored.

A Knights Tale

After the entirety of their 2020 season was scrapped due to the ongoing pandemic, Mount Saint Mary College began their 2021 campaign with a four-game sweep of Purchase College, winning each game by no fewer than eight runs.
 
Laura Dentato began her collegiate career by going 13-for-17 with six extra-base hits, eight runs scored, and nine RBI against the Panthers, including a 4-for-4 game on 3/29, earning Skyline Player of the Week honors in the process. Her efforts against Purchase propelled the Farmingdale native to the top spot on the team and in the Skyline in batting average (.765), slugging (1.294), and on-base percentage (.778). The sophomore's 13 hits and eight runs scored are good for second and fifth, respectively.
 
Including Dentato, MSMC has at least one other representative in the Skyline Top 10 in an array of categories; including four Knights with batting averages over .545 and five players with .727 slugging percentages or better. Sofia Gannon is right behind Dentato averaging .625 at the plate with an on-base percentage of .667 clip while Nicole Rosner follows with a .571 batting average and slugging at a .786 clip. Dentato, Rosner, and Samantha Bendig all have team-leading eight RBI.
 
Dentato does find herself second on the team in RBI with nine as Olivia Ferara’s 10 ranks her in first, driving in four runs in the season opener against Purchase (3/27) and driving in a pair of runs in every game thereafter.
 
The Knights featured in the Skyline Conference Championship game in every season since 2015, winning three consecutive titles in that span from 2016-18. MSMC saw their bid to win their fourth-straight crown halted by Farmingdale State in 2019.
