2021 Skyline Softball

  • Eight teams will play a full round-robin schedule comprised of a four-game weekend series (home-and-home doubleheaders).
  • Only the first three games of the four-game set will count toward the league standings.
  • Eight-run rule after five innings. International tiebreaker rule starts in the 10th inning.
  • Top four teams will qualify for the 2021 Skyline Softball Championship (May 14-16).

The Bear Facts

Coming off a three-games-to-one series victory against Mount Saint Mary, St. Joseph’s (Brooklyn) begins a four-game series against Purchase College on Saturday.
 
Ashleigh Hartwig was selected as Skyline Conference Player of the Week for the second time in her career as she went 9-for-13 at the plate against MSMC. The junior drove home six runs, scored five, hit a pair of home runs and a triple. She maintains the league lead in at-bats (39), hits (21), RBI (15), and home runs (2) while her .846 slugging percentage is good for fifth in the Skyline. Hartwig needs seven hits to reach the 100-hit milestone and if she accomplishes the feat this weekend, will be the fastest in team history to hit the mark.
 
Nicole Trani also hit her first home runs of the season against the Knights; the first of which erased a three-run deficit and was the catalyst for the Bears’ comeback victory in the opening game of Friday’s doubleheader. Scoring a run in each game of the series, Trani added three more RBI to finish the series with six.
 
Arianna Heinsch’s .600 on-base percentage places her fourth in the conference. The rookie went 6-for-9 in the series (.667) with a double, a pair of RBI, and scoring three runs. Heinsch also stole three bases, all on Saturday.
 
The series also saw Allison Kaspar earn her first two wins of the season. The junior tossed 8.2 innings in three games, including a pair of shutout innings in relief on Saturday
 
Jessica Mecham tossed her fourth complete game on Friday, improving to 4-1 in the circle. Her 2.67 ERA is the third-best ERA in the Skyline and is the team leader with nine strikeouts.

Pulse on the Panthers

The Purchase College softball team enters this weekend’s series with SJC Brooklyn in search of their first win of the season, beginning the campaign 0-12 (0-9 in Skyline play).

With her team-leading 10 hits in 26 plate appearances, freshman Hannah Cronin also has the team lead in batting average (.385) and slugging percentage (.385) while junior Jaiya Hewitt is first in on-base percentage (.462) and cracks into the Skyline Top 10 with three stolen bases.

Sharing the top spot in RBI with four are Kelly Agostini and Brianna Palermo. Averaging .250 at the plate, Agostini’s 28 at-bats places her eighth in the conference. Palermo is responsible for the Panthers’ lone home run of the season, a two-run inside-the-park homer against SJC Long Island (3/21).

Both Hewitt and Agostini are tied for second on the Panthers in runs scored (4) with Bronx native Alexandria Perez’s seven leading in that department.

Agostini has also pitched in all 12 games this season for Purchase, leading the Skyline with 57.2 innings pitched. Her 19 strikeouts are good for fourth in the conference.

The Panthers hold a 12-8 edge in the all-time series that started in 2008. The squads have split the doubleheader the last three seasons, but Purchase has a 5-3 edge in Skyline Conference meetings.
