Bio

Dr. Salvador Portugal joined as the official Team Physician for the  St. Joseph's University, NY – Brooklyn Athletics Department in the Fall of 2018. He is an Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at the NYU School of Medicine and serves as Director of the Sports Medicine Fellowship Program and Medical Director of Sports Medicine Rehabilitation within the Rusk Department of Rehabilitation Medicine.

Dr. Portugal is an Interventional Spine & Sports Medicine Physiatrist within the NYU Langone Orthopedic Center. He completed his fellowship in Musculoskeletal / Pain Medicine at Rutgers University-New Jersey Medical School with a specialized focus on outpatient musculoskeletal care as it pertains to Sports, Spine, and Occupational Rehabilitation. He completed a residency in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at the NYU Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine. He is a graduate of the University of Pikeville-Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine and Fordham University.

He is board-certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine. Dr. Portugal has an additional certification in Musculoskeletal Sonography (RMSK).

He also draws from his own experiences as a former collegiate soccer student-athlete for the NCAA D-I Fordham Rams to guide students to navigate the challenges of sports-injury through their college career. Dr. Portugal treats the St. Joseph's University, NY – Brooklyn training room as an extension of the NYU Langone Health campus, and he aims to connect student-athletes to the most advanced care.
