John Jay Downs Men's Baseball 10-8

(BROOKLYN, NY)  John Jay (1-10) scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to build an 8-0 lead that would be too much for the Bears to overcome as St. Joseph's (0-3) lost 10-8 on Friday afternoon at the American Legion Baseball Complex.

Jon Mendez (Brooklyn, NY/Xavarian) led the Bears offense going 3-for-5 with two RBIs and one run scored.  A.J. Passione (Brooklyn, NY/Xavarian) had two hits and scored two runs.  Jason Iannozzi (Brooklyn, NY/Kingsborough CC) batted in two and Alvaro Quinones (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Loughlin) scored two.

Chris Coffey(Brooklyn, NY/Kingsborough CC) made his first start for St. Joseph's and suffered his second loss on the season.  The junior pitched 4.2 innings, striking out two, giving up eight runs, of which only three were earned.

John Massoni pitched 7.0 innings for the Bloodhounds, striking out 17, giving up two runs, both unearned.  Massoni kept the Bears bats quiet for most of the game, retiring the side in order in the first, second, third and fifth innings.

John Jay got on the scoreboard first in the the second inning loading the bases with a walk, hit batter, and single.  A one-out double by Steven Roman put John Jay up 2-0.

The Bloodhounds added six more runs in the fifth, four runs a result of two back-to-back St. Joseph's errors.

St. Joseph's scored their first run in the sixth inning when the centerfielder dropped a Mendez fly ball, allowing Passione to score from third base.

Both teams exchanged runs in the sixth and seventh innings.  Facing the Bloodhound bullpen in the eighth, the St. Joseph's offense came alive putting up six runs.  The first three batters reached safely loading the bases and prompting another John Jay pitching change.  Mendez and Iannozzi each hit two-RBI doubles in the inning.

Jon Cubero (Brooklyn, NY/Xavarian) got out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom eighth striking out the side keeping the deficit at two.  In the last frame, St. Joseph's was able to get the go-ahead run at the plate with one out, but a fly out and a strikeout closed out the game.

St. Joseph's got eight hits and committed three errors.  John Jay recorded 13 hits and committed four errors. 

St. Joseph's returns to action on the road on Sunday, March 15 facing Maritime College for a double header.  First pitch is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
