Men’s Baseball Loses Doubleheader To Maritime

(THROGS NECK, NY)  The St. Joseph's College men's baseball team lost both games of the doubleheader to SUNY-Maritime on Sunday afternoon, by scores of 10-7 and 5-3.  St. Joseph's falls to 0-5 and Maritime improves to 2-2.

In the first game, the Bears got on the board first, scoring two runners in the opening frame.  The Privateers responded scoring their first four batters, including a three-run homer from Matthew Cresswell.  Maritime scored four more runs in the second inning which prompted Coach John Torres to relieve starter Kevin Hernandez (Queens, NY/Newtown HS) after 1.2 innings.  St. Joseph's picked up two runs in the third inning loading the bases and Jacob Ramos (Hasbrouck Hts., NJ/Hasbrouck) drawing a walk and Jason Iannozzi(Brooklyn, NY/Kingsborough CC) knocking in a run with a single.  The Bears pulled within one, after the fourth inning scoring three runs, with Jon Mendez (Brooklyn, NY/Xavarian) and Jon Matzelle(Queens, NY/St. Francis Prep) picking up sacrifice fly RBI's.  Maritime would score two more runs in the bottom fourth that would prove to be the final score as the Bears were retired in order in the fifth and sixth innings and left two runners stranded in the final inning.

In game two, the Privateers jumped to an early 4-0 lead off two two-run homers by John Gould and Ryan Simpson.  After the bad first inning, starter Chris Davidson(San Carlos, CA/Canada College) settled down and held the Privateers in check allowing only one additional run in the fourth inning, pitching his first complete game of the season, while striking out six.  Maritime starting pitcher Andrew Mayer kept the Bears bats quiet for most of the game, allowing only one run off two hits.  St. Joseph's made a late rally in the seventh off the Privateers' relievers, sending the potential tying run to the plate, but fell short only scoring two.

For the two game set, A.J. Passione(Brooklyn, NY/Xavarian) led the St. Joseph's offense going 3-for-7, scoring three runs with a double and an RBI.  Iannozzi was the only other Bear to have a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 in the first game and 0-for-3 in the second.  Anthony Langone (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) and Jacob Tobin(New York, NY/Dalton School) each scored two runs.  Davidson went 1-for-3 and stole three bases.  Starting pitchers Hernandez (0-2) and Davidson (0-1) each were credited with the loss.

St. Joseph's takes the field again on Wednesday, March 18th to face New York University for a single game.  First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 PM at the American Legion Baseball Complex in Brooklyn, NY.
