Baseball Pounds St. Paul’s College To Start Southern Swing

LAWRENCEVILLE, VA – The St. Joseph's College baseball team got their southern road trip off to a good start sweeping Division II St. Paul's College 21-3 and 10-2 both games finishing in five innings.  Anthony Langone (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) went 6-for-6 in the doubleheader. Chris Coffey (Brooklyn, NY/Kingsborough CC) and Danny Contant (Staten Island, NY/Xavarian) each picked up wins on the mound.

In the opener, the game remained tied 2-2 after the first inning, but the St. Joseph's scored at least four runs in the final five innings for the lopsided 21-3 win, the largest margin of victory in the history of the second year program.  The Bears bats combined for 22 hits, seven coming for extra bases.  A.J. Passione (Brooklyn, NY/Xavarian) highlighted the game with a three-run home run in the fourth inning.

Coffey picked up his third win of the season pitching four innings, striking out seven, allowing two runs and scattering three hits.

In the nightcap, Contant kept the Tiger's bats quiet carrying a no-hitter into the fifth inning.  After striking out the leadoff hitter, Contant gave up a single to erase the no-no.  On the offensive side, St. Joseph's kept hitting the St. Paul's pitching combining for another 15 hits.  The Bears scored one run in the second and third innings, breaking open the game with three runs in the fourth and five more insurance runs in the fifth for a 10-2 victory.

Contant picked up his first collegiate win, striking out nine and giving up only two hits and one earned run.

For the twin-bill, six Bears recorded at least four hits.  Langone scored five times, with two doubles and an RBI.  Passione went 4-for-7 with a team high six RBIs, four runs scored, a homer, double and stolen base.  Jon Mendez (Brooklyn, NY/Xavarian) batted .800, slugged 1.400, and drove in five runs, scored four times, with three doubles.  Joseph Boccia (Westwood, NJ/Westwood) went 4-for-6 with four RBIs, four runs, two doubles and a triple.

Rain forced Friday's scheduled single game to be cancelled.

St. Joseph's (5-12) continues their southern road trip in Washington, D.C. to face Gallaudet University on Sunday.
