Baseball Drops Two to Mount Saint Mary

NEWBURGH, NY – Jason Iannozzi (Brooklyn, NY/Kingsborough CC), Keith Juricich (San Mateo, CA/Canada College) and Steve Tanamal (Brooklyn, NY/New Urtecht HS) each had four hits in a losing effort over a two-game set where the St. Joseph's College baseball team (12-18) fell to Mount Saint Mary (25-9) on Saturday afternoon.  The Bears let a five-run lead slip away in the final inning, losing 11-10 in eight innings, and dropping the second game 13-2.

Iannozzi went 4-for-7 with four RBI and a run.  Juricich batted 4-for-6 with a double, a run, and three stolen bases.  Tanamal hit 4-for-8 with a triple, double, a walk, three RBI and two runs scored.  Anthony Langone (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) and Joseph Boccia (Westwood, NJ/Westwood) each had three hits, an RBI and two runs.

In the opener, St. Joseph's scored five runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-2 lead capped by a Tanamal triple with the bases loaded that scored three runs.  Mount Saint Mary cut the lead to one scoring three runs in the fifth.  The Bears added a solo run in the sixth after Tanamal doubled and scored on a Jon Mendez (Brooklyn, NY/Xavarian) sacrifice fly.

Danny Contant (Staten Island, NY/Xavarian) started on the hill in game one pitched six innings allowing eight hits and five runs (three unearned).  He struck out two and walked none leaving the game with a 10-5 lead as the Bears added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh.  The Bears were unable to close out the game allowing four hits to open the frame en route to a five-run inning that sent the game into extra innings.

In the extra frame, St. Joseph's could not generate any noise with their bats and the Blue Knights put runners on first and second with one out.  An error allowed the runner on second to score capping the 11-10 comeback.

Deflated by their loss in the opener, St. Joseph's fell behind 8-0 after two innings and never was able to recover.  St. Joseph's also committed nine errors for the game, their highest in a game this season.  Boccia scored the only two runs for the Bears in the fourth and sixth innings.  Langone started on the hill going four innings allowing eight earned runs in the loss.
