Jon Mendez Powers Baseball Past Lincoln University

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA – Freshman Jon Mendez(Brooklyn, NY/Xavarian) went 6-for-10 with a home run, three doubles, 10 RBI and six runs over a two-game set where the St. Joseph's College baseball team swept Lincoln University 21-11 and 27-4.  The Bears capture the season series 3-1 after splitting at home earlier this season.

St. Joseph's combined for 38 base hits in the doubleheader with 13 different Bears picking up a hit and scoring at least once.  St. Joseph's never trailed at any point in either game.

The Bears had innings of six and eight runs in the opening game to build a decisive lead.  Only six of St. Joseph's 21 runs were earned as the Lions committed 10 errors for the game.  A.J. Passione (Brooklyn, NY/Xavarian) paced the Bears going 3-for-4 with a home run, double, a stolen base, three runs and two RBI.  Mario Noriega (Los Angeles, CA/South Pasadena) went 4-for-5 with a double and three runs.  Anthony Langone(Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) went 2-for-6 with a stolen base, four RBI and a run.  Keith Juricich (San Mateo, CA/Canada College) went 2-for-3 with a double, three RBI and two runs.  Joseph Boccia (Westwood, NJ/Westwood) hit a solo homer for his only hit of the game.

Chris Davidson(San Carlos, CA/Canada College) started on the mound picking up his third win of the season allowing two runs, six hits, striking out seven and walking one in four innings of work.

In the nightcap, St. Joseph's sent 14 batters to the plate in the third inning and smacked six doubles to plate 10 runs and didn't look back.  Mendez had one of the most impressive individual games by a Bear in their two-year history going 5-for-5 with a home run, three doubles, eight RBI and four runs.  Davidson, playing designated hitter, homered with four RBI and a run to extend his hitting streak to 12 games.  Langone also homered and finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and three runs.  Alvaro Quinones (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Loughlin) went 3-for-6 with a double, stolen base, three RBI and one run.  Jacob Ramos (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/Hasbrouck) went 2-for-3 with a double, three RBI and three runs.

Danny Contant(Staten Island, NY/Xavarian) picked up his second win of the season on the hill pitching four innings of two-hit ball allowing two runs (one unearned) and striking out nine.  Jon Cubero(Brooklyn, NY/Xavarian) pitched one inning in relief allowing one hit and two runs (both unearned) with two strikeouts.  Mendez closed the game pitching two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out two.

St. Joseph's improves to 11-14 on the season and Lincoln University falls to 3-28.  The Bears return to the diamond tomorrow to face Yeshiva on the road for a non-conference twin-bill.  First game is scheduled for noon.
