Bears Plate 37 Runs in Sweep of Gallaudet

WASHINGTON, DC – Chris Davidson (San Carlos, CA/Carlmont) tossed a two-hit shutout and had six hits and five RBI at the plate leading the St. Joseph's College baseball team to their first sweep of the season, defeating Gallaudet 15-3 and 22-0 on Saturday afternoon at Hoy Field.

Davidson scored four runs and had three doubles and two walks, finishing 6-for-7 for the twinbill.  Getting the start on the mound in the nightcap, Davidson struck out 11, setting a new Bears single-game record, earning his first shutout and improving his record to 2-2 on the bump.

Kevin Diaz (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) accumulated four hits, with five runs scored, three RBI and a double.  Jon Mendez (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) went 3-for-3, driving in a pair of runs and scoring twice, with a double.  Joseph Boccia (Westwood, NJ/Westwood) also picked up three base knocks with five runs scored.

Anthony Langone (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) launched his first career grand slam and his second home run of the season, accumulating six RBI and two runs on the series.  Keith Juricich (San Mateo, CA/Serra) and Alvaro Quinones (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Loughlin) each scored four times.

Juricich (2-1) earned the win in the opener, with his second complete game of the season, striking out four and allowing three runs (two earned).

St. Joseph's returns to action on Thursday, April 15th, making the trip across the Verrazano Bridge for a doubleheader against CUNY rivals College of Staten Island slated to begin at 4 p.m.

Game 1 – St. Joseph's 15, Gallaudet 3

Juricich held Gallaudet at bay going perfect through 3 2/3 before a two-out single by Jeremy Shepps spoiled the no-hitter.

A Danny Zaretsky (Brooklyn, NY/Lincoln) single in the second gave the Bears a 2-0 lead, bringing home Diaz who led off with a double and Juricich who walked.

Both teams remained close until St. Joseph's posted a seven spot in the fifth inning to break the game open.  Mendez delivered a two-run single to center to start the scoring, followed by RBI doubles from Davidson, Juricich and Zaretsky and a sacrifice fly by Joe Geloso (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell).

The Bisons managed to score a single tally in the bottom half of the frame, but couldn't stop the hot bats, as St. Joseph's added five more runs in the sixth capped by a Langone grand slam, giving the Bears a commanding 14-1 lead.

Protecting the lead, Juricich surrendered two more runs on three hits for the complete game victory.  Steven Gosselin (0-3) received the loss for Gallaudet, giving up six runs in four innings.

Davidson finished 4-for-5 at the plate with three doubles, two RBI and two runs.

Game 2 – St. Joseph's 22, Gallaudet 0

As in the opener, both teams remained neck and neck through the first four innings, the only scoring coming in the St. Joseph's third on a Davidson sacrifice fly that scored Boccia who singled earlier in the inning.

Gallaudet's only two hits of the game came in the second and third innings.  The Bisons still managed to get runners into scoring position, but Davidson shut down any threat, fanning seven batters through three.  Davidson locked down Gallaudet for the remainder of the game, giving up three walks that never posed any threat.

St. Joseph's broke the game open again with another big fifth inning, plating six runs on only one hit, a two run single by Diaz.  The Gallaudet hurlers began to display control problems, walking four and hitting two.  For the game the Bisons issued 13 walks and hit the Bears eight times.

After adding two in the sixth to take a 9-0 lead, the flood gates opened in the seventh as St. Joseph's scored 13 runs on only two hits, the first coming on the 15th batter of the inning, with Bisons hitting or walking the first eight batters.
