Bears Fall to USCAA #2 Apprentice

HOLBROOK, NY – Kevin Diaz (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) rapped four hits and scored four runs as the St. Joseph's College baseball team dropped a 16-8 USCAA decision to the #2 ranked Apprentice School on Saturday afternoon at the PAL Sports Complex.

Diaz fell a home run shy of hitting for the cycle, finishing with a 4-for-4 outing, collecting a triple, double, two singles, with a walk, a stolen base and two runs batted in.  Keith Juricich (San Mateo, CA/Serra) also accumulated a season-high four hits for the game while driving in three runs and scoring once.

John Porcelli (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian), Joseph Boccia (Westwood, NJ/Westwood), and Chris Davidson each had a pair of base knocks and Kevin Hernandez scored a pair of runs.  Danny Contant (Staten Island, NY/Xaverian) took the loss for the Bears going 4.0 innings giving up 10 runs (six earned) on eight hits, striking out two.

Apprentice (23-13, 6-3 USCAA) was led by Jonathan Dehoux who had four hits, with two home runs and six RBI.  Tabb Griffey earned the win surrendering 15 hits and eight runs in 7.0 innings, striking out four.

St. Joseph's couldn't keep pace with the Builders who scored four runs in the opening frame and scored in every inning except for the eighth to lead from start to finish.

The Bears added single tallies in the first and third innings before scoring a trio runs in the fourth to trail 10-5 coming on a two-out rally with Diaz and Juricich knocking in three runs with back-to-back singles.  St. Joseph's threatened in the seventh inning loading the bases loaded with no outs, coming away with two runs as a double play diffused the threat.

St. Joseph's outhit Apprentice for the game, 18-15, but the Builders powered four home runs, including a grand slam by Dehoux in the fourth that broke the game open.

St. Joseph's (8-21, 0-2 USCAA) return to the diamond on Sunday, May 2, squaring off against Skyline foe Yeshiva University in a non-conference single game matchup at MCU Park scheduled to begin at noon.
