Bears Baseball Receives Bid to 2013 USCAA Small College World Series Earning No. 8 Seed
BROOKLYN, N.Y. – For the first time in their six-year history, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) baseball team has received a bid to compete in the 2013 United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Small College World Series. The tournament will be held from May 6-9 in Butler, Pennsylvania at Pullman Park.
The Bears (20-12) were ranked as high as No. 3 in the USCAA Coaches' Poll—holding the position for three straight weeks—after opening the season with a blistering 13-2 start and winning their first eight games.
St. Joseph's—one of two teams making their first appearance in the National Championship—has received the No. 8 seed in the 10-team, double-elimination tournament. The Bears will play No. 9 seed Briarcliffe College—the 2011 USCAA National Champions and only other metropolitan-based team—on Monday, May 6th at 11 a.m., beginning their quest for St. Joseph's first national championship.
Waiting in the wings for a potential second round matchup is No. 1 seed The Apprentice School who finished runner-up to Spalding University in last year's finals.
Bears baseball will be the second team to compete in a USCAA National Championship this season following in the steps of the men's basketball team who qualified for their fifth tournament last March.
With a pair of wins over the weekend, the Bears have already set a new school record for victories in a season and will look to continue to improve upon that total.
