Baseball Drops Season Opener to Montclair State

Baseball Drops Season Opener to Montclair State

ABERDEEN, Md. — Seven different Bears knocked a hit, but the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) baseball team dropped their season opener to Montclair State University, 10-2, on Saturday afternoon at the Cal Ripken Experience.

How it Happened

Montclair State (5-4) took control with a five-run third as the Red Hawks assembled the crooked frame with two outs and aided by two Bears (0-1) miscues that allowed all across unearned.

St. Joseph's got on board in the fifth when Connor Henson (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual) and Matthew Trudden (Broad Channel, N.Y/Christ The King) led off with singles, a fly out put runners at the corners and Lucas Collet (Toulouse, France/Lyc'ee Bellevue) brought Henson home with a grounder.

But the hosts got the run back in the bottom half of the inning and tacked on four more runs in their next two at bats to build a 10-1 cushion.

The Bears managed a solo tally in the top of the eighth after Chris Leary (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) and William DeLuca (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream Central) singled and walked to put two runners on setting up Joseph Langan (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) for a two-out knock for SJC's second run.

The Bear Facts

  • St. Joseph's accumulated seven hits — Louis Lombardi (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep), Chris Zinser (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep), DeLuca, Henson, Langan, Leary, and Trudden each knocking a hit.
