Baseball Unable to Erase Early Deficit Against King’s (Pa.)

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — The St. Joseph's University Brooklyn baseball team was dealt a 10-3 non-conference defeat to King's College (Pa.) on Wednesday afternoon from Lipo Field.

Three Bears – Chris Leary (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial), Anthony Hernandez (Selden, N.Y./Newfield), and Zach Schnabel (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) – logged multi-hit games, combining to go 6-for-9 at the plate.

How it Happened

The Monarchs (9-17) jumped out to an early lead thanks to a five-run first inning. It was followed by Matt McHugh (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) tossing three scoreless innings, striking out four, and allowing a hit in the fourth.

The fifth stanza saw Chris Perez (Bronx, N.Y./Mount Saint Michael Academy) score the Bears' (4-21) first run of the contest, courtesy of Abner Victor's (San Pedro de Macorís, Dominican Republic/John Adams) RBI single with two outs. St. Joseph's had the bases loaded in the top of the sixth but weren't able to trim the King's deficit further.

The hosts tacked on three runs in the bottom half of the frame, increasing their advantage to 8-1. Hernandez's double scored Leary in the top of the eighth before a two-RBI single put the Monarchs ahead 10-2 in the home end of the inning. The Bears scored their third run on an RBI groundout from Omar Salcedo (New York, N.Y./LaSalle Academy) to confirm the 10-3 result.

For the Bears

  • Leary went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

  • Schnabel finished 2-for-2 while Hernandez finished 2-for-3.

  • Perez went 1-for-2 with a fifth-inning double. Victor also went 1-for-2.

  • TJ Moussette's (Centereach, N.Y./Newfield) pinch-hit single in the ninth rounded out the Bears' nine hits.

  • Pitcher Justin Conaty (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison) was pulled after a third of an inning pitched and was handed the loss (0-4).
