Hernandez Named to All-Skyline Baseball First Team; Santoriello Lands on All-Sportsmanship Team

NEW YORK — Leading the St. Joseph's University Brooklyn baseball team in nearly every hitting category this season, sophomore Anthony Hernandez (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) has been named to the 2022 Skyline Conference Baseball All-Conference First Team as announced by the league office this morning. Fellow classmate Mike Santoriello (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph's by the Sea) was honored with a spot on the All-Sportsmanship Team.

Hernadez improved on all of his offensive numbers from his rookie campaign, which culminated in second-team honors — the first Bear rookie to ever receive All-Skyline distinction. He also becomes the first Bears baseball player to receive All-Skyline honors multiple times and the fifth first-team honoree in program history.

The centerfielder was one of two Bears to start in all 37 games this season. He paced the SJBK offense in batting average (.381), slugging (.627), on-base percentage (.442), runs (30), hits (30), RBI (26), home runs (3), triples (4), doubles (14), and stolen bases (16). Hernandez was ranked fourth in the league in slugging, doubles, and triples; sixth in OPS; and tied for 10 in home runs and stolen bases. He was equally as strong defensively as he was at the plate. With a wide range and strong arm, he made just two errors in 84 chances and had three assists.

Left-handed pitcher Santoriello was third on the staff in innings pitched, working 43.2 innings over nine appearances with seven starts. He struck out 28 batters on the year, highlighted by a complete-game shutout over John Jay where he struck out a career-high six.

The Bears recorded a seven-win improvement over last season at 9-28 overall and bested their conference win total by six, finishing 7-13 in league play.

The Skyline All-Conference teams and Player, Pitcher, Rookie, and Coach of the Year were voted on by the league's head coaches prior to the start of the 2022 Skyline Championship.
