Men’s Basketball Upended by Western Connecticut State

DANBURY, Conn. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) dropped a 79-39 non-conference decision to Western Connecticut State on Tuesday evening from Feldman Arena. The Bears (0-5, 0-1 Skyline) were led by Evan Sirakis (Hollis, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) who scored a team-high 13 points.

How it Happened

WestConn (5-1) raced out to a commanding 20-2 lead, which was halted by a Sirakis three at the 9:55 mark. A pair of treys by the junior transfer and Anderson Beltre (East Elmhurst, N.Y./Holy Cross) late in the period narrowed the deficit to 30-18 before the hosts took a 40-18 lead to the locker room.

The second half saw Sirakis and sophomore guard Jalen Gist (Brooklyn, N.Y./Medgar Evers Prep), combine to score 10 of the Bears' 21 points in the period. WestConn ultimately stretched their advantage to as many as 42 and came away with the 79-39 victory.

For the Bears

  • Sirakis was a three-ball shy of matching his season-high. He also finished with a pair of boards, as many assists, and a steal.

  • Chris Tracy (Glendale, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) hit a couple of treys to finish with six points while logging two rebounds and a dime.

  • Beltre finished with five points and handed out a pair of assists. Gist also scored five.

  • Joe Sheehan (Staten Island, N.Y./Gaynor McCown) and Joshua Gordon (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) were the team's leading rebounders as they collected four caroms. Sheehan added three blocks to his stat line.
