Mikos Posts First Career Triple-Double as Men’s Basketball Endures Road Loss to York

JAMAICA, N.Y. — Senior forward Chris Mikos (Freehold, N.J./St. John Vianney) notched his first career triple-double; leading the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's basketball team with 23 points, 14 rebounds, and 10 assists. However, his efforts weren't enough for the Bears as they fell to York College (N.Y.), 95-68, on Friday night in the semifinal of the York College Invitational.

It was the second recorded triple-double in program history and the first since February 17, 2016, when Matt O'Neill '16 – on his Senior Night – scored 15 points, dropped 12 dimes, and pulled 10 boards against SUNY Maritime.

How it Happened

The two sides traded buckets for much of the first half. The first nine minutes of the game saw the Bears (0-10, 0-3 Skyline) shoot 4-of-7 from beyond the arc, taking their largest lead of the contest at the 11:47 point of the period, 18-9. The Cardinals (3-5, 1-0 CUNYAC) would pick at the SJC lead throughout the period, trimming it to one, 26-25, on a Mert Zor three-ball with 4:06 left before taking the lead on a fastbreak layup on their next trip up the floor. Joe Sheehan (Staten Island, N.Y./Gaynor McCown) tied it at 27-all from the free-throw line before the York retook the lead for good on their ensuing possession, 30-27. By halftime, the hosts held on to a 40-33 edge.

Trailing by 12 at the 12:15 point of the period, the Bears used an 8-0 run – thanks to a pair of treys by Evan Sirakis (Hollis, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) and Samil Melo's layup (Brooklyn, N.Y./Adams Street) – to narrow the deficit to four, 59-55. Following the scoring run, York began to pull away; leading by as many as 32 with 85 seconds remaining and winning by 27, 95-68.

For the Bears

  • Mikos shot 10-of-16 from the field and 2-of-5 from distance. His 10 assists are a season-high.

  • Sirakis finished with 12 points on 4-of-9 from beyond the arc, and six assists.

  • Sheehan pulled eight boards to go with seven points.

  • Richie Simon (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) totaled five rebounds.

  • Melo collected four caroms, scored as many points, and blocked three Cardinal shots.

  • Chris Tracy (Glendale, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) and Chris Williams (Trenton, N.J./Nottingham) each finished with six points and combined for three steals.
