Mount Saint Vincent Hands Men's Basketball Conference Defeat

RIVERDALE, N.Y. — In their resumption of Skyline Conference play, the St. Joseph's University, NY (Brooklyn) men's basketball team dropped an 87-64 decision to the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Wednesday night from the Peter Jay Sharp Center.

How it Happened

The Dolphins (2-5, 1-1) possessed an early 14-7 advantage, forcing the Bears (2-6, 0-2) to use a timeout at 13:08 in the first half. The timeout feuled the Bears as they scored 13 of the next 18 points  – with Chris Williams (Trenton, N.J./Nottingham) scoring nine points in the span – to take a 20-19 lead. However, the hosts closed the half on an 18-0 run to lead 37-20.

SJBK ended their nearly eight-minute scoring drought ended on back-to back buckets from Anderson Beltre (East Elmhurst, N.Y./Holy Cross) and Joe Sheehan (Staten Island, N.Y./Gaynor McCown) two minutes into the second stanza. The Dolphins continued pacing themselves ahead, leading by as many as 24 with 16:35 to play (52-27). Beltre scored most of his team-leading 18 points in the second half but it was not enough as CMSV held a 23-point win come the final buzzer.

For the Bears

  • Beltre's 18 points is a single-game career-high while eight rebounds are the most in a game since he pulled nine boards against Old Westbury last February.
  • Sheehan and Williams each produced 11 points and two assists with the former, along with Chris Tracy (Glendale, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) adding five caroms.
  • Evan Sirakis (Hollis Hills, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) had five assists to go with seven points.
