Men’s Basketball Drops Midweek Matchup to St. Elizabeth

MORRISTOWN, N.J. — In the first of three straight games in the Garden State, the St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) men's basketball team suffered a 74-59 defeat to St. Elizabeth University on Wednesday night.

How it Happened

The Eagles possessed the advantage from the opening tip, failing to relinquish it over the course of the 40 minutes. A 10-point run saw the hosts hold an 18-point lead with 5:07 remaining in the first half, 32-14. However, the Bears trimmed the deficit to eight before entering the half down 36-26. Evan Sirakis (Hollis Hills, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) shot 60 percent from three-point range to lead all SJBK scorers with nine points in the period.

Following a full timeout at 15:56 in the second half, the Bears outscored the Eagles 12-4 over the next five minutes to shrink the gap to nine points, 53-44. The deficit ultimately grew to as many as 20 in the final 60 seconds before St. Elizabeth finished with the 74-59 result.

For the Bears

  • Sirakis completed the contest with a team-best 18 points on 7-for-14 shooting while going 4-for-6 from beyond the arc. He also had six rebounds.

  • Adam Jasaraj (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan Wagner) finished with 12 points and three boards.

  • Max Butler (Staten Island, N.Y./Port Richmond) again saw the most minutes on the team, seeing the court for 33 of 40 minutes. He registered eight points, six four rebounds, and a pair of steals in the span.

  • Chris Williams (Trenton, N.J./Nottingham) scored five points.

  • The trio of Alex Macheras (Sandy Spring, Md./Sherwood), Jonathan Reno (Staten Island, N.Y./Moore Catholic), and Stephan Direny (Brooklyn, N.Y./Achievement First) combined for 12 points and 11 rebounds.

The Bears continue their stay in New Jersey as they compete in the two-day Greg Grant Tip-off Tournament, hosted by The College of New Jersey. They'll take on the host Lions on Friday, November 17 at 5 pm and await one of Wells College or Hunter College on Saturday afternoon.
