Reno’s 34 Points Not Enough in Men’s Basketball’s Defeat at TCNJ

EWING, N.J. — Sophomore Jonathan Reno (Staten Island, N.Y./Moore Catholic) dropped a career-best 34 points on Friday afternoon as the St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) men's basketball team dropped a 84-54 decision to The College of New Jersey in the first semifinal of the Greg Grant Tip-Off Tournament.

How it Happened

The Lions opened the proceedings on a 14-point outburst before Reno drained his first triple of the contest. Despite Reno's 19 points on 5-of-9 from three-point range in the half, the hosts' lead ballooned to 32-10 before entering the intermission with a 44-25 advantage.

Reno continued to lead the Bears' offense in the second half. Alex Macheras (Sandy Spring, Md./Sherwood) attacked the glass with seven rebounds in the stanza. TCNJ ultimately saw a 32-point lead before confirming their 84-54 triumph; advancing to the Greg Grant Tournament final in the process.

For the Bears

  • Reno scored north of 30 points for the second time in his career. He shot 8-of-14 from beyond the arc while having four rebounds and three steals.

  • Macheras pulled a game-leading 12 boards

  • Max Butler (Staten Island, N.Y./Port Richmond) finished with six points and three rebounds.
