Stevenson Narrowly Holds Off Men’s Basketball

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) men's basketball team dropped a 65-62 result to Stevenson University on Saturday afternoon from The Hill Center.

How it Happened

The Mustangs opened the game on an 11-0 run, their largest lead of the day. An eight-point spurt midway through the period saw the Bears close the gap to one possession, 15-13. The navy and gray ultimately took the lead in the closing minute, holding a 29-28 edge at the intermission on a buzzer-beating layup from Adam Jasaraj (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan Wagner).

The Bears lead grew to 38-33 five minutes into the second half. Neither side led by more than three throughout the second half. St. Joseph's held a 60-59 lead on a Nazareth Warren (Brooklyn, N.Y./Spring Creek Campus) reverse layup with 68 seconds to go but the Mustangs regained the advantage for good on the ensuing possession, returning to Maryland with a three-point triumph, 65-62.

For the Bears

  • Jonathan Reno (Staten Island, N.Y./Moore Catholic) finished with a game-leading 20 points to go with four steals and three rebounds.

  • Evan Sirakis (Hollis Hills, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) totaled 11 points, five assists, and three boards.

  • Max Butler (Staten Island, N.Y./Port Richmond) flirted with a double-double, registering nine points and seven rebounds.

  • Warren logged eight points and three caroms.

  • Jasaraj finished with five rebounds and six points.
