Men’s Basketball Drops Skyline-Opening Nailbiter to Mount Saint Vincent

RIVERDALE, N.Y. — Four Bears in double figures were not enough for the St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) men's basketball team in their Skyline Conference opener as the College of Mount Saint Vincent earned a 77-69 triumph on Wednesday evening from the Peter Jay Sharp Center.

Jonathan Reno (Staten Island, N.Y./Moore Catholic) and Evan Sirakis (Hollis Hills, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) finished with 14 points while Max Butler (Staten Island, N.Y./Port Richmond) notched 12 of his own. Alex Macheras (Sandy Spring, Md./Sherwood) pulled 14 boards to go with 11 points to secure his first double-double as a Bear.

How it Happened

The evening began with St. Joseph's going on a 14-4 run, showcasing a 6-of-9 shooting performance from the field. Despite the Dolphins narrowing the gap to one possession, the navy and gray managed to pull further ahead, establishing a 16-point lead – their largest advantage of the contest – with 1:46 left in the first half. The Bears' form persisted as they headed into the locker room with a 39-28 lead.

At the start of the second half, a 44-28 lead for the Bears was gradually eroded by the hosts, scoring the next 12 points and bringing their deficit to single digits at 44-40. The Dolphins, in a series of lead changes, claimed their first lead of the night from the free-throw line at 10:37, 51-50. Sirakis banked a triple off a Mount Saint Vincent turnover at 2:32 to close the gap to 67-66. A three-pointer from Connor Wein just 10 seconds later initiated an 11-point run that concluded the game; snapping the Dolphins' six-match winless streak.

For the Bears

  • Reno added six rebounds, three assists, and a pair of steals to his stat line.

  • Sirakis finished with three assists.

  • Butler had six rebounds and as many assists.

  • Macheras' scoring and rebounding totals were both a season-best.
