BROOKLYN, NY – Sarah Lawrence scored two early goals and never trailed, handing the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's soccer a 4-1 conference loss on Sunday evening at Aviator Field.
Sarah Lawrence improves to 2-4 overall and 2-1 in Hudson Valley Men's Athletic Conference play, in third place in the league standings. St. Joseph's falls to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in league play.
The Gryphons drew first blood in the seventh minute after drawng a foul in the box and Harper Hunt converting on the ensuing penalty kick. Just over a minute later, Sarah Lawrence jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a goal from ishaan Pujari assisted by Hunt.
Pujari found the back of the net again in the 15th minute for his seventh goal of the season into a tie for the conference lead in goal scoring.
Sophomore Iqbal Husain (West Palm Beach, FL/Palm Beach Gardens) scored his first collegiate goal to put the Bears on the board in the 25th minute. Husain cut the deficit to 3-1, cleaning up a rebound from a shot from freshman Deleon Johnson (Toronto, Canada/Roosevelt HS). Johnson would finish with two of the Bears four shots on goal, as Sarah Lawrence held a slight advantage in shots, 15-13.
All the scoring would come in the opening 45 minutes with the Gryphons scoring again on a Hunt penalty kick in the 39th minute.
Sophomore Vinny Rossi (Bayside, NY/Holy Cross) made his first start in goal finishing with six saves, four coming in the second half, in a losing effort.
The Bears are amidst a stretch of five-straight conference games and will seek their first win of the season travelling to Glen Cove, NY to square off against Webb College on Saturday, October 6th at 1 p.m.
