MASPETH, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's soccer team dropped a 9-1 non-conference decision to John Jay College on Friday afternoon at the Metropolitan Oval.
John Jay (6-9-3) held a 17-2 shot advantage in the first half, but went into the intermission up 2-0 on goals from Kareem Roberts and Jesus Lugo in the 21st and 35th minutes.
The Bloodhounds then exploded for seven second-half goals to put the game out of reach for the Bears. John Jay scored three in a three-minute span with two in the 56th minute and one in the 58th minute.
St. Joseph's (1-8-0) finally broke through in the 77th minute when reigning HVMAC Rookie of the Week, Matthew O'Neill (Brooklyn, NY/St. Edmund Prep) tallied his fourth goal of the season to cut the deficit to 8-1.
Substitute Nermin Kurtesi finished with two goals and an assist and Korede Griffith had four assists and a goal to lead the host Bloodhounds.
Sophomore Michael Miner (Schenevus, NY/Schenevus) made nine saves in absorbing the loss.
St. Joseph's will look to rebound on Sunday, October 21st hosting Fisher College of Boston, Mass. in the lead game of a doubleheader with the women. Kickoff is slated for 1:30 p.m. at Kaiser Park in Brooklyn, N.Y.
