Bears Soccer Notches Second Win of Season Upending Fisher

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's soccer team scored three goals in the first 25 minutes of action on their way to a 5-2 win over Fisher College on Sunday afternoon at Kaiser Park for the Bears second win of the season and ending a three-game skid.

St. Joseph's (2-8) were led by freshman Matthew O'Neill (Brooklyn, NY/St. Edmund Prep) and sophomore Deleon Johnson (Toronto, Canada/Roosevelt) who each tallied two goals and assisted on another to finish with a game-high five points.

The Bears dominated the action in the in the opening stanza with the Falcons having trouble possessing the ball on St. Joseph's half of the field. The Bears held a 22-1 shot advantage going into halftime.

Sophomore Raul Urshela (Orlando, FL/Colonial) opened up the scoring in the 9th minute of action by heading the ball into the net off a cross from O'Neill for his sixth goal of the season. St. Joseph's would strike again in the 17th minute when Johnson would score off a breakaway to give the Bears a 2-0 lead. Johnson tallied his second goal of the game in the 23rd minute when he received a through ball from sophomore Marco Fuentes (Orlando, FL/Timber Creek) and put it past the goalkeeper to put St. Joseph's up 3-0 going into halftime.

The second half started where the first half ended for the Bears as they would score in the 52nd minute when O'Neill took a shot from the top of the box to collect his first goal of the game. Less than a minute later St. Joseph's scored again off a corner kick with O'Neill on a receiving end of a Johnson corner to put the Bears up 5-0.

Despite the large deficit, Fisher (0-11) would hang tough outshooting St. Joseph's in the second half 13-9. The Falcons upped their defensive pressure and possessed the ball in the Bears half of the field much more than they did in the first half. The Falcons got on the board in the 56th minute when Gary Maldonado scored off a deflection in front of the goal. Fisher struck again in the 63rd minute when Alvaro Maura found the back of the net off a breakaway.

Sophomore goalkeeper Michael Miner (Schenevus, NY/Schenevus) made six saves for the Bears for his second win of the season.

Goalkeeper Steven Masterson made 12 saves in the loss for the Falcons.

St. Joseph's returns to action when they travel to Patchogue to take on sister campus St. Joseph's (L.I.) on Wednesday, October 24th at 7:00 pm.
