Men's Soccer Falls to Medgar Evers on Goal in 79th Minute

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's soccer team dropped a tightly contested 2-1 decision to borough rivals Medgar Evers College on Monday night at the Aviator Sports Complex.

St. Joseph's falls to 0-2 on the year while Medgar Evers picks up their first win of the season improving to 1-3.

The game was close throughout as neither team was able to gain a significant advantage. However, both teams had scoring opportunities throughout the game but were unable to capitalize for the most part.

The Cougars got on the board early in the 5th minute of action on a goal by Nikolai Calder off a free kick and it looked like it would be a long game for the Bears. However, St. Joseph's played Medgar Evers even for the remainder of the half with the Cougars only holding a 6-5 advantage in shots and carrying a 1-0 lead into intermission.

The second stanza would see the Bears get on the board for the first time this season when freshman Giuseppe Porretto (Queens, N.Y./Christ the King) fired a shot that was originally saved by Medgar Evers goalkeeper Christopher Welsh but off the ensuing rebound junior Raul Urshela (Orlando, Fla./Colonial) would slot the ball past Welsh to tie the game at 1-1 in the 69th minute.

The action went back and forth with both St. Joseph's senior goalkeeper Michael Miner (Schenevus, N.Y./Schenevus) and Welsh making key saves until the 79th minute when the Cougars broke through with the game-winner coming on a free kick off the foot of Borris Pendie to give Medgar Evers the lead for good.

Urshela led the Bears offense recording seven shots with five coming on net while Porretto also had a shot on goal. Miner made nine saves in a losing effort.

St. Joseph's returns to action on Wednesday, September 25th as they travel to Tibbetts Brook Park in Yonkers, NY to face Mount Saint Vincent at 7 p.m.
