Men's Soccer Notches Win Against HVIAC Foe Webb

GLEN COVE, N.Y. – Led by two goals from junior Raul Urshela (Orlando, Fla./Colonial), the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's soccer team defeated Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) foe Webb Institute, 2-1, on Saturday evening.

St. Joseph's (2-8, 2-4 HVIAC) snaps a two-game losing streak while Webb (0-8, 0-7 HVIAC) concludes their season without recording a win.

The game was close throughout as both teams had a significant amount of scoring opportunities throughout the contest with the Bears holding a 10-8 shots on goal advantage on the night.

The first half saw St. Joseph's jump on the Webbies early forcing goalkeeper Tyler Totten to make four saves in the first 25 minutes of the action but were unable to capitalize. The Bears finally broke through in the 27th minute when Urshela headed in a ball directly off a Kyle Johnson (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook Central) corner kick to give St. Joseph's a 1-0 lead.

Webb came right back and less than four minutes later knotted up the score at 1-1 when Nicholas Ratinaud took a cross from Kathryn Chaffee and headed it into the back of the net.

The Bears had their next great scoring chance in the 41st minute when the Webbies committed a handball in the box but Totten stopped the ensuing penalty kick by sophomore Matthew O'Neill (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) to keep the game tied.

The two teams headed into the break tied at 1-1 with St. Joseph's holding a narrow 13-12 shot advantage.

The action went up a notch to begin the second half as Webb recorded a shot on goal 24 seconds into the frame that was stopped by Bears junior goalkeeper Michael Miner (Schenevus, N.Y./Schenevus) who made seven saves on the night in earning his second victory of the season. However, St. Joseph's responded just a little over two minutes later when Urshela struck again taking a pass from O'Neill and fired it past Totten to put the Bears up 2-1.

St. Joseph's backline contained the Webbies offense for the remainder of the game led by Miner who made a key save with less than three minutes left in the game to preserve the lead and the win for the Bears.

Urshela finished the game with five shots and now leads the team with his six goals on the season while freshman Giuseppe Porretto (Queens, N.Y./Christ the King) led the team with his four shots on goal. O'Neill had three shots that went on net and now has a team-high four assists on the year.

Webb was led on offense by Ilya Mouravieff who had a team-high ten shots and four shots on goal. Totten made eight saves and absorbed the loss.

The Bears conclude HVIAC play with a matchup against first-place Berkeley College on Tuesday, October 22nd at 8 p.m.
