Strong Second Half Gives Mount Saint Mary 2-0 Victory Over Men’s Soccer

NEWBURGH, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's soccer team headed north on Wednesday to Mount Saint Mary College for their second conference game of 2017. At halftime, the score was knotted at 0-0, but a strong start to the second stanza for the Knights propelled them to their second Skyline triumph.

The Basics

  • Final Score: Mount Saint Mary 2, St. Joseph's 0
  • Records: Mount Saint Mary (4-5, 2-0), St. Joseph's (0-6-1, 0-2)
  • Location: Newburgh, N.Y. — Kaplan Field

How It Happened

  • The game was a defensive one in the first half, evident by the shot totals (5 for MSMC, 0 for SJC), and no shots coming on goal.
  • Almost immediately in the second, the Knights would turn things around. Joey Dolan found the ball off of a header in the 50th minute and launched it to the far post for a 1-0 lead.
  • Dolan was able to ride this momentum, as seven minutes later he would find the back of the net near the right post to put the Knights up 2-0.
  • In between goals, sophomore Mateusz Georges (Brooklyn, N.Y./New Utrecht) fired off the Bears' first shot, but it was wide of the goal. SJC's offense wasn't able to answer the two goals, as they fell to 0-2 in league play.

For the Bears

  • Georges attempted to power the offense, having fired half of the team's four shots.
  • Freshman Alejandro Oliveros (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) came in at keeper in the 59th minute, and subsequently saved the only shot he saw on goal.

The Bear Facts

  • Mount Saint Mary was predicted to finish first by the league's coaches in the preseason poll, receiving all-but-one first-place votes.
  • The Bears are now 0-3 all-time against Mount Saint Mary.

Next Up for the Bears

  • A trip to Farmingdale State on Saturday (Sep. 30) for their third Skyline tilt. Kick-off is scheduled for noon, with live stats available at SJCBears.com.
