Men’s Soccer Clipped by First-Place Maritime, 3-2

NEW YORK — Sophomore Kenneth Garcia (Elmhurst, N.Y./Bayside) scored his 10th goal of the season as the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's soccer team (3-9, 1-3 Skyline) outshot Maritime College (11-3, 4-1 Skyline), but the Privateers came away with a 3-2 Skyline Conference victory to move into solo first place atop the league standings on Saturday afternoon at Randall's Island.

How It Happened

The Bears held a 7-3 edge in shots in the opening 45, but the Privateers found the back of the net with their first shot as Andrew Higgins snuck a pass between two defenders to find Joe Gino for the lone goal in the 26th minute.

Ten minutes after intermission Chris Tavernese sped up the right side past the Bears defense and scored his ninth of the season to push the visitors lead to 2-0. The Bears cut the deficit back to one goal in the 75th minute with a good build-up that saw Thomas Mastoras (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) and Mateusz Georges (Brooklyn, N.Y./New Utrecht) finding Kenneth Garcia at the top of the box who fired a shot left of the keeper.

Maritime would respond less than five minutes later with a Thomas Kropp goal that would be the eventual game-winner. But the Bears would fight until the very end and clawed back within one with less than 10 minutes to play as Joshua de la Cruz (Howard Beach, N.Y/Bayside) put away a loose ball inside the six-yard box for his first collegiate goal. The Bears frantically tried to find the equalizer and gained a corner with less than a minute to play, but saw their comeback bid fall short.

For the Bears

  • Garcia led all players with four shots. Scoring his 10th goal of the season, he now shares the league lead with Rayneri Ruiz of SJC Long Island.
  • Joseph Sepulveda (East Elmhurst, N.Y./Bayside) and Georges finished with three shots each.
  • Mastoras' assist was his fourth of the season, tied for sixth in the category among Skyline leaders.

Next Up for the Bears

The Bears will host borough foes Medgar Evers College on Monday (Oct. 8) in a non-conference Columbus Day matchup kicking off at noon at Randall's Island Field 10. Live stats will be available on SJCBears.com.
