Sepulveda’s Second Half Double Not Enough as Men’s Soccer Falls Short to Merchant Marine

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Despite a pair of second-half goals by sophomore midfielder Joseph Sepulveda (East Elmhurst, N.Y./Bayside) the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's soccer team (4-10-1, 2-5 Skyline) dropped its penultimate home game, 5-2, to the United States Merchant Marine Academy (9-4-1, 6-1-1 Skyline) on Tuesday night from Aviator Field.

How it Happened

Merchant Marine scored the games opening goal in the 13th minute. Their lead increased to 3-0 with goals in the 16th and 24th minutes. With nine minutes left before the halftime whistle, the Mariners extended their lead to 4-0.

The Bears found the back of the net for the first time in the 53rd minute when Sepulveda scored on a free kick in his own attacking third. Merchant Marine scored for the fifth time in the 57th minute on a corner kick that found an attacker inside the six-yard box. Sepulveda added a second goal to the Bears' tally in the 72nd minute on a ball from freshman Justin Wright (Hempstead, N.Y./Uniondale) as the match ended 5-2.
