Larios and Torres Powers Men’s Soccer to Road Win Over Old Westbury

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — Seniors Sergio Larios (Woodside, N.Y./William C. Bryant) and Eric Santiago Torres (Woodside, N.Y./Forest Hills) provided the scoring for the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's soccer team (4-6-2, 2-4-2 Skyline) as they blanked the SUNY College at Old Westbury (2-10-1, 0-8-2 Skyline), 2-0, on Tuesday night from the campus of Farmingdale State College.

How it Happened

Neither side was able to generate much offense in the first period as there were a combined four shots and three corner kicks. Graduate goalkeeper Alejandro Oliveros (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) stopped the Panthers' lone shot on goal at the 26-minute mark. The Bears' only shot of the period came in the 41' when Menzi Simelane's (Johannesburg, South Africa/St. Stithians College) corner took a couple of bounces in the box before the ball eventually reached Jesus Cano (Brooklyn, N.Y./Cristo Rey Brooklyn). The rookie immediately dished a headed pass to Larios, who slotted home the opening score before the stroke of halftime.

Carrying the momentum into the second half, Larios nearly added a second to his goal tally just three minutes in but his shot landed in the arms of the Old Westbury goalie. SJC recorded four more shots – including a pair by Diego Volpe (Long Branch, N.J./Red Bank Catholic – before the hosts took their first of the period. Torres fired an 85th-minute free-kick from 35 yards out past the diving Panther keeper to put the game away, sealing the Bears' 2-0 win.
