Men's Tennis Grabs Third at HVIAC Championships; Parr Named All-HVIAC

FLUSHING, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's tennis season came to a close with a third place finish at the 2014 Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) Championships this afternoon at the USTA Billy Jean King National Tennis Center.

After winning just three total matches over three consecutive sixth-place finishes in the past conference championships, the Bears (2-11, 2-3 HVIAC) totaled six points paced by sophomores Nolan Parr (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook Central) and Kyle Johnson (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook Central) who were finalists in the No. 2 doubles competition securing their team-leading sixth doubles victory of the season in the process.

James Hanophy (Albertson, N.Y./Holy Trinity HS) and Nick Orlando (Brooklyn, N.Y./Christ the King) secured an opening round win at No. 3 doubles to advance to the semifinals, falling to eventual champion Pratt.

The Bears also produced three semifinalists in the singles competition, Kevin Caicedo (Jackson Heights, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) at No. 2 singles, Johnson at No. 4 singles and Parr at No. 5 singles. Parr and Caicedo finished the season sharing the team lead with five singles wins each and Caicedo set a new Bears rookie record.

In awards ceremonies following the tournament, Parr was named to the 2014 All-Conference Team, the first time in his career receiving the honor

Regular season champion Pratt captured their second straight tournament title winning all nine flights and the Culinary Institute of America took tournament runner up honors.
