Mariners Sail Past Men's Tennis in Road Tilt

KING'S POINT, N.Y.—After picking up their first win of the season on Tuesday night, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's tennis team suffered a 9-0 setback to the United States Merchant Marine Academy in a non-conference road match on Thursday at the Brooks Stadium Courts.

The Mariners (7-4) cruised to their sixth win in seven matches recording their third straight shutout.

USMMA raced out to a 3-0 lead after doubles play with the duo of James Hanophy (Albertson, N.Y./Holy Trinity) and Carlos Mayorga (East Elmhurst, N.Y./St. John's Prep) providing the most resistance at No. 3 doubles in an 8-5 defeat.

The hosts continued to control the singles matches with Matthew Smith (Brooklyn, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) securing four games off Moana Kawatchi at No. 4 singles in a 6-3, 6-1 loss.

The Bears (1-5) will host the New School on Saturday at The USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in a non-conference match starting at 1 p.m.
