Men's Tennis Wins Two in a Row Defeating York, 6-3

JAMAICA, N.Y.—After securing two big Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victories last week, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's tennis team returned to the courts and upended York College, 6-3, on Tuesday night in a non-conference road tilt.

The Bears (3-6) assemble their first winning streak of the season and downed the Cardinals (0-11) for the first time in six meetings.

Carlos Mayorga (East Elmhurst, N.Y./St. John's Prep) cruised by Shun Ramnauth at No. 5 singles in a straight-set, 6-1, 6-2 victory and fresh off being named HVIAC Player of the Week, Nolan Parr (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook Central) captured a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles to give the Bears a quick 2-0 advantage. It's is Parr's 10th career singles win, only the third Bear all-time to reach the mark.

James Hanophy (Albertson, N.Y./Holy Trinity) downed Felix Liew at No. 4 singles in three sets, 6-0, 2-6, 6-2 as the squads split the opening singles matches 3-3, with the three Bears losses coming in close, hard-fought matches, as the Kyle Johnson (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook Central) and Dickson Tan (Brooklyn, N.Y./East-West School of International Studies) both took their opening sets at No. 3 and No. 6 singles, before falling in three.

But the Bears would shine in doubles play, sweeping all three matches. Kevin Caicedo (Jackson Heights, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) and Mayorga took a comfortable 8-2 victory over Ramnauth and Justin Mo at No. 2 doubles before Parr and Johnson clinched the overall match winning 9-7 at the top doubles position. Parr is now undefeated in six straight matches between doubles and singles.

Hanophy and Tan tacked on another point at No. 3 doubles with a 10-4 tiebreaker with the match shortened due to darkness.

The Bears will looking to build their first three-match winning streak in program history hosting John Jay College on Thursday, April 23 at 6 p.m. at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
