Mayorga's Comeback Singles Win Clinches 5-4 Triumph for Men's Tennis Over John Jay

WAYNE, N.J. — After dropping his opening set in singles, senior Carlos Mayorga (East Elmhurst, N.Y/St. John's Prep) rallied to win in a super tiebreaker to deliver the first victory of the season for the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) defeating John Jay College, 5-4, in a non-conference match on Thursday afternoon at the Wayne Indoor Tennis Club.

  • Final Score: St. Joseph's 5, John Jay 4
  • Records: St. Joseph's (1-1), John Jay (1-3)
  • Location: Wayne, N.J.
  • Courts: Wayne Indoor Tennis Club

How It Happened

  • Senior Carlos Mayorga and junior Matthew Smith cruised at No. 3 doubles posting a shutout victory while senior Kyle Johnson and sophomore Alec Smalley teamed up at No. 2 doubles and grinded out an 8-6 victory to give St. Joseph's a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.
  • Smalley cruised at No. 6 singles to remain undefeated on the day defeating Kevin LaTorre, 6-2, 6-1 but John Jay remained within reach taking No. 1 singles at love.
  • The remaining four singles matches were highly contested with freshman Vaso Vukosavovic earning his first collegiate singles victory at No. 2 singles 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) pulling the Bears within one of victory but Johnson was edged out by a break, 7-5, 8-6, at the No. 3 position.
  • Both Smith and Mayorga dropped their opening sets at No. 4 and No. 5 singles putting the Bloodhounds in position to take the overall win, but both came back in the second set--Mayorga gutting out a 8-6 win in a tiebreak--to force super-tiebreakers, with the Bears needing just one of the two matches to seal the victory.
  • Smith fought valiantly but came up short falling 10-7 leaving the overall match knotted at 4-all and up to Mayorga and the senior delivered in the super-tiebreaker winning in extra points, 12-10.

The Bear Facts
