Men’s Volleyball Drops Two Over Weekend to Cooper Union and Yeshiva
NEW YORK, NY - St. Joseph's College men's volleyball remained winless losing two straight set matches to Cooper Union and Yeshiva University this past weekend. The Bears still haven't won a set competing in their first varsity season.
Against Cooper Union on Saturday, the Bears played their most competitive set, losing 30-16, 30-18, 30-26. In the third set, the Bears fell behind 21-10 but managed a 6 point run behind the serve of Muhammad Ali Bhatti (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison). St. Joseph's remained close for the remainder of the set, ultimately losing by four.
Greg Creamer (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) led the Bears with four kills. Ed Han (McLean, VA/W.T. Woodson) dished out four assists and dug up five. Joseph LoGuidice (Queens, NY/Archbishop Molloy) had a team-high six digs.
Facing Yeshiva University on Sunday, St. Joseph's came out strong early remaining tied with the Maccabees 12-12 in the opening set. Yeshiva controlled the remainder of the set on their strong service and closed out the set 30-17. Yeshiva's offensive attack came on in the second and third sets posting 31 kills with a 40.1 hitting percentage, taking the sets 30-12, 30-15.
Despite the final score, the Bears had their best offensive score to date, with a season high-13 kills and 5.0 blocks. Jon Matzelle (Queens, NY/St. Francis Prep) had four kills and two blocks. Christian Jocelyn (Queens, NY/St. John's Prep) had four kills, hitting .429, with four digs. Ed Han dished out 10 assists with four digs. Joseph LoGuidice had a team-high five digs.
St. Joseph's returns to action on the road on Thursday night facing Medgar Evers (0-19). Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
