Men's Volleyball Taken Down Twice in Brooklyn College Tri-Match

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team fell to Brooklyn College in straight sets 3-0 (3-25, 17-25, 16-25), then dropped a three-set loss to Bard College (13-25, 15-25, 17-25), at the West Quad Center on Saturday.

In their opening match, the Bears (3-8) were led by Raul Urshela (Orlando, Fla./Colonial) with five kills while Taso Kostikas (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) had three kills to go with his team-high five digs, and Iqbal Husain (West Palm Beach, Fla./Palm Beach Gardens) distributed eight assists throughout the match.

Timothy Hui had six kills and a match-high 21 assists for the Bulldogs (10-10), and Anthony Koyfman supplied eight kills in the three-game sweep for Brooklyn College.

The Bulldogs exploded out of the gate with a dominating performance in the first game, running out to a 13-1 run before securing the win 25-3. In the second stanza, St. Joseph's fought to within three points, but four service aces by Hui in the set propelled Brooklyn to victory. The Bears had an early lead in the third set and hung tough, but a late Bulldogs surge help them notch their tenth win of the season.

In the second match, Bard (7-19) swept the Bears for their third consecutive loss of the season. Urshela and Kostikas led St. Joseph's with six kills apiece. Thomas Kennedy (Breezy Point, N.Y./ St. Edmund's Prep) also provided four kills. Husain produced 17 assists as well in a losing cause.

The Raptors got a kill from every player on the court today, including a match-high nine from Alex Adams and six from Shane McDonald. Mahir Shiekh paced Bard with 27 assists throughout the match.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Against Brooklyn, the Bears hit -.125 for the match and (11 K-19 E-8 A) while the Bulldogs hit .310 in their three-game sweep (31 K-13 E-30 A).
  • In the Bard match, St. Joseph's had a hit percentage of -.023 (19 K-21 E-18 A). The Raptors hit .208 and finished with 30 kills (30 K-14 E-29 A).

  • With 25 assists over the tri-match, Iqbal Husain dished out his 1000th career assist, a category he holds the all-time lead in.
