About Division III Week

Did you know that on average, about one-fifth of students enrolled at NCAA Division III member schools participate in varsity athletics? This week, St. Joseph's College joins approximately 450 Division III schools and 43 conferences in the nationwide celebration of NCAA Division III Week. We are proud of our student-athletes, who excel both in the classroom and in athletic competition while demonstrating leadership, community service and campus involvement.

Series History

This is the 16th meeting all-time with Webb -- the Bears' most faced opponent tied with Yeshiva -- with the Bears holding an 8-7 edge in the series winning the last eight meetings, including a meeting earlier this season.

Last Meeting

Three weeks ago, the Bears rallied from a two-set deficit to defeat Webb on the road in five sets, their second comeback victory this season from down 2-0.

Three Bears registered double-doubles in victory -- Taso Kostikas (17 kills and 15 digs), Raul Urshela (15 kills, 14 digs) Norrin Martinez (38 assists, 11 digs).

Brian Mills led the Webbies with 11 kills.

The Bear Facts

  • The Bears snapped a four-game skid on Thursday, cruising past Sarah Lawrence in straight sets to move back to .500 and also set a program record for wins in a season (9).
  • In addition to reaching 10 wins for the first time in program history, a victory today would guarantee the first .500-or-better season. A victory would also solidify a third-place finish in conference and set up a semifinal matchup against Yeshiva University in the HVIAC Tournament next Wednesday.
  • None of the four Bears' conference games have been decided in three sets and three have gone to a deciding fifth set.
  • Senior and three-time HVIAC Player of the Week Raul Urshela is the center of the Bears' attack pounding 3.43 kills per game, hitting at a .218 clip, both marks second in the HVIAC. Urshela will finish his four-year career with his name etched atop the Bears record book in almost every major category.
  • Juniors Taso Kostikas and Thomas Kennedy round out the attack sitting third and fourth in the conference with 2.34 and 2.27 kills per set, respectively.
  • Junior Norrin Martinez distributes 6.71 assists per set and lands 0.74 service aces per set, both tops in the HVIAC.

Scouting the Webbies

  • Webb shocked two-time defending champion Yeshiva with a straight-set victory two weeks ago for their lone win of the season. The Webbies have played tough all season, taking the opening two sets from the Bears and falling to Pratt in four sets on the road.
  • Brian Mills and Nolan Conway pace the Webb attack with 2.27 and 2.13 kills per set, respectively. Mills is also a force at the net with 12 blocks on the season.

Next Up for the Bears - HVIAC Tournament

In their final HVIAC Tournament, joining the Skyline Conference next season, the Bears will look to capture their first tournament title on Wednesday, April 15 at Yeshiva University. Semifinal matches will be at 6 p.m. with the championship at 8 p.m.
