Double-Digit Kills For Driscoll And Salomons Not Enough As Men’s Volleyball Falls In Close Match Against Yeshiva

NEW YORK, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team (0-12, 0-3 Sky) won their very first set of the season (25-23) but were unable to capture victory in the match, falling 3-1 (25-19, 27-25, 25-21) on the road versus Yeshiva University on Wednesday night.

In what was by far their highest scoring match of the season, the Bears were led by Sophomore Tim Driscoll (Staten Island, N.Y. / St. Peter's) and Junior Sean Salomons (Staten Island, N.Y. / St. Peter's). Driscoll produced a game-high and season-high, 15 kills. He also added a season-high 11 digs and two service aces. Salomons manifested a season-high 11 kills, seven digs, two service aces, and five total blocks. Freshman Dejon St. Rose-Cuffy (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Bishop Loughlin) chipped in, matching a season-high five kills and rising for three total blocks. Senior Alec Willis (Staten Island, N.Y. / St. Joseph by the Sea) directed the team well, assisting on a career-high 29 of the teams 36 total kills. Sophomore Stephen Eddy (Glendale, N.Y. / Christ the King) helped the Bears, pounding four kills, one service ace, and seven digs.

Yeshiva (3-10, 2-4 Sky) was led by Derek Orenshein and Chaim Aryeh Rubin. Orenshein had a team-high 14 kills, seven digs, and one service ace. Aryeh Rubin smashed 13 kills, nine digs, and one service ace.

The Bears were carried in the first set by Salomons who had three kills and one service ace in the period, however, Yeshiva won the set, 25-19. St. Joseph's established a 14-10 lead in the second, but the Maccabees would knot it up 23-23 and soon took a 24-23 lead. A pair of kills by St. Rose-Cuffy and Salomons evened the set 25-25 but back-to-back kills by Yeshiva ultimately secured them the win, 27-25.

In the third, the Bears and Maccabees found themselves in the same scenario as in the second, with the set tied 23-23. This time SJC would seal their first set win of the season behind three unanswered scores by Driscoll (one kill, one service ace) and St. Rose-Cuffy (one kill). Yeshiva would take a commanding 20-13 lead in the fourth stanza, but an 8-4 run led by three Driscoll kills cut the lead to three, 24-21. Despite the late surge by the Bears, Yeshiva would go on to win, 25-24.

The Bears will play one of their final two home games of the season against St. Joseph's College (Long Island) on Tuesday, March 20. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
