Medgar Evers Downs Men’s Volleyball in Straight Sets

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Despite 10 kills from senior outside hitter Tim Driscoll (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's), the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team fell in three sets (25-19, 25-13, 25-20) on the road at borough rival Medgar Evers College on Thursday night.

How It Happened
Both sides had a streaky start to the match as Medgar Evers opened it leading 5-0, then SJC scored four unanswered, and the hosts rebounded with six-straight points capped off by an Enmanuel Jacquez ace for a 10-4 advantage.

The Bears kept chipping until a kill from Driscoll brought them within two at 15-13. However, MEC closed the frame with a 10-4 rally, featuring three kills from Nius St. Clair, to win the first.

Medgar Evers began the second with an 11-3 edge and later pushed it to double-digits (18-8) after an SJC error. The Cougars didn't let the visitors get close and cruised to a 25-13 victory behind five kills from Jacquez in the period.

Dejon St. Rose-Cuffy (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) slammed a kill early in the third to tie the score at five, but MEC then put up five unanswered points to regain control. The Bears kept it interesting, however, later using a 5-1 spurt to even the score once again (14-14). The Cougars bounced back and didn't allow SJC to take the lead as Gerod Humphrey scored three of their last 11 points to close out the match.

  • Driscoll finished with 10 kills (.318), four digs, two assists, and an ace.
  • Senior middle blocker Sean Salomons (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) added five kills, four total blocks, and a dig.
