Driscoll’s 21 Kills Not Enough for Men’s Volleyball at Yeshiva
NEW YORK — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team (1-14, 1-2 Skyline) took on Yeshiva University (5-6, 2-1 Skyline) at the Max Stern Center on Tuesday night for a Skyline bout and forced a fifth set after being down 2-1 but couldn't complete the comeback and split the season series with the Maccabees.
Senior outside hitter Tim Driscoll (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) led the Bears in defeat with a 21-kill, 19-dig double-double as four players had at least seven kills on the night.
How It Happened
An SJC error tied the first set 9-9 and another error four points later knotted the score again at 13 showcasing the back-and-forth nature of this match early. Both sides kept battling until a kill from Driscoll gave the Bears a slight, 20-19, edge and they finished on a 5-1 run for a 25-21 set one triumph.
Set two was 7-7 in the beginning but St. Joseph's rode their momentum to an 8-2 spurt, capped off by a kill from Sean Salomons (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's), gave them a 15-9 advantage. Yeshiva didn't stay down for long and used eight unanswered points to gain a 22-19 lead and they held on for a 25-22 victory to tie the match at one.
The third period was no different seeing the score gridlocked at 13 after a Yeshiva error. Stephen Eddy (Glendale, N.Y./Christ the King) dropped in a kill to tie it back up at 19, but the Macs outscored SJC 6-1 to conclude the stanza winning 25-20 with one more set needed to win the match.
St. Joseph's didn't go down easily, however, taking an immediate 9-4 lead in the fourth after a Juan Herran Ocampo (Armenia, Colombia/Manhattan Comprehensive Night and Day) ace.
YU then put up five-straight points to take a one-point edge, but the back-and-forth play continued as Salomons notched a kill to maintain an 18-17 advantage. Kills down the stretch from Eddy, Dejon St. Rose-Cuffy (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin), Driscoll, and Salomons helped the Bears stay alive and take the fourth 25-23.
The fifth was another evenly matched battle as the score was tied at two, three, 11 (after a Driscoll kill), and 13 (after Yeshiva error), until back-to-back mishaps from SJC clinched the win for the Maccabees putting them above .500 in conference play.
For the Bears
- Driscoll had three aces along with his game-highs of 21 kills and 19 digs.
- Timothy Boyd (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) notched a double-double as well with 37 assists and 12 digs.
