Men’s Volleyball Starts Out Strong in Road Loss at NJCU

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team (1-15) jumped out to an early lead but fell in straight sets, 25-20, 25-13, 25-17, to former Skyline Conference foe New Jersey City University (8-10) on Thursday evening.

Seniors outside hitter Tim Driscoll (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) and Sean Salomons (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) and junior Stephen Eddy (Glendale, N.Y./Christ the King) combined for all 18 kills in defeat.

How It Happened

Back-to-back kills by Driscoll powered the Bears to the first three points of the match and SJC led by as many as four on three separate occasions in the opening set and as late as the 14-10 mark. But the Gothic Knights drew even at 16-all and later scored five straight to build a 21-17 separation that the Bears couldn't recover from.

NJCU continued the momentum into the second and raced out an 8-1 lead and closed out the set on the strength of 18 kills at a .361 clip.

The Bears remained close in the third, and held brief leads early on, before the hosts pulled away with a 7-1 run and SJC was held on four kills in the set unable to cut into the deficit.

For the Bears

• Tim Driscoll put away a team-high seven kills and added six digs.
• Stephen Eddy followed with six kills at a .200 hitting percentage and led the back row with nine digs.
• Salomons rounded out three kills to register a kill with five and stuffed a pair of solo blocks.

Next Up for the Bears

St. Joseph's resumes Skyline Conference action with a tri-match against Purchase College and the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday (Mar. 23). The Bears open the day against host Purchase with a 10 a.m. match.
